Previously we talked about how liposculpting can be used in conjunction with proper diet and exercise to create better defined six-pack abs by tackling the subcutaneous fat that is often resistant to exercise and diet.
While lipo is effective and removing flab pockets and recontouring, it’s also important to know its limitations. Can it get rid of love handles, for instance? Again, it’s worth understanding that lipo is not intended as a solution for weight loss. It is aimed at fat deposits near the stomach as well as the thighs, hips or buttocks. If your love handles are part of a bulging stomach because your abdominal wall is weak, lipo may not work nor will it tighten loose skin. However, you can tone and flatten the abdominal area through a combination of liposuction and abdominoplasty, a process commonly referred to as a tummy tuck. During the process, belly fat is removed, repairs are made to the muscle wall and any excess skin is removed.
While liposuction is effective in the removal of love handles, keep in mind a few things. Though it does remove love handle fat cells, it will not result in a “perfect” figure automatically nor will it prevent a person from gaining weight again. Patients should maintain a proper exercise and diet regimen to ensure the weight stays off.
Following love handle liposuction, patients may experience swelling or bruising which should subside gradually over a few weeks. Soreness is expected for about a week or two following the surgery and exercise should be kept to gentle movements to encourage circulation.
