There is liposuction, HD liposuction, and then there is radiofrequency-assisted liposuction, also known by its acronym RFAL. RFAL is among the more recent minimally invasive procedures, utilizing thermal energy to encourage skin tightening while removing unwanted fat. The radiofrequency waves act as a complement to traditional liposuction through the dissolving of fat and promoting the production of collagen to create firmer skin.
Local anesthesia is used to perform radiofrequency-assisted liposuction. A surgeon will make a tiny incision in the area to be treated followed by the insertion of a radiofrequency transmitting electrode. These areas may include the arms, buttocks, abdomen, and neck, for example, Radiofrequency waves are guided upwards through the fatty tissue via another electrode, which also avoids the treatment area becoming too hot.
As the radiofrequency waves cause the fat to liquefy, it is immediately suctioned from the body through a thin tube called the cannula. The radiofrequency waves will stimulate the production of collagen below the skin, resulting in the treated area appearing firmer with a greater tone.
Because RFAL procedures are minimally invasive, there is little risk scarring. Patients also experience less bruising, pain and/or discomfort as they recover. The procedure is good for healthy individuals dealing with stubborn fat areas that won’t go away even with proper diet and exercise. It is not, however, intended to be a weight loss surgery.
